WESTON GLOWERED AT KATE. “What in Christ’s name was that all about?”

“They were asking me about you,” she said. “About what happened to your family. And that family up in Tacoma. And about why I left my job in Santa Flora.”

“And what did you tell them?”

“Nothing,” she said. She forced the word through clenched teeth, making it sound like a hiss. “I told them they were full of shit.”

“And?”

“They think I’m full of shit.”

“Morons.”

Adrenaline coursing through her system, Kate took another step forward. “Are they morons?”

Her heart slammed in her chest and her fingers curled into fists. She noticed Weston’s body stiffen as she closed in on him.

“Are they morons, Noah? I’m in here telling them you’re not some nutcase who cuts people’s tongues out, then you take it on yourself to burst into the room like some crazy man and throw them out.”

“You said they were leaving, I decided to help them along.”

“And now you’ve pissed them off.”

“Me? I didn’t wake up because you were all singing Kumbaya.”

Kate sighed. He was right. She was the one who had started shouting. They had played her like the experts they were and she had taken the bait.

She should have known better. But Weston sure hadn’t helped the situation.

“Maybe they’ll let it go for now,” she said. “But sooner or later they’ll be back, and they could detain us and drag us off for questioning.”

“Wonderful. You know, Chris and I did a pretty good job of staying under the radar until you came along.”

“I was invited, remember? If you still have a problem with it, talk to our little friend.” She paused. “We’d better start packing.”

Weston shook his head. “We can’t. Not now.”

“What are you talking about? I know John’s murder threw a monkey wrench into things, but we need to get out of here.”

“You’re not making sense.”

“Do the math. There’s a murderer on the loose. You are a person of interest in a homicide case in North Carolina. Since we’ve arrived in town, a man I know—a man they believed was the Harbinger—has been brutally murdered, and they’re dumb enough to think you did it.”

“Which is exactly why we can’t leave. I know I’m always the one who wants to cut and run, but that’ll just make them more suspicious, and I’ve got enough clouds hanging over my head.” He paused and took a breath. “Besides, I did some thinking before I fell asleep. You remember what Chris said about Hoffman’s murder right before you blacked out? I know you’ve been rattled, but—”

“That there were two of them. Two people who killed him. And at least one of them was female.”

“Exactly,” Weston said. “And maybe if we can figure out who they are, that’ll put us right with the FBI.”

Kate snorted. “You’re joking, right? Those two make Bob MacLean look like a fucking genius.”

“We have to at least try,” he said. “I don’t see any other way.”

“You don’t think they’ll be watching us?”

“I think you’re probably a good enough cop to know when they are.
